Room 217: The Making of a Teacher
From 2006 until 2015 Steve MacKenzie was a columnist for Foster’s Daily Democrat, a daily newspaper in Dover, NH. His column, Room 217, appeared on the Education Page and was designed to give a glimpse of real-life public education.
While most of the pieces featured students and events from his classroom, many went beyond to other classrooms, teachers, administrators, environments, and time periods.
Teachers aren’t made just at universities and education doesn’t just happen in the classroom. Both may occur while meditating in nature, meeting a Holocaust survivor, weeping for a friend whose home has been washed away, or watching a kid help his cow give birth.
